The SPCA is the only animal welfare organisation in South Africa regulated by an Act of Parliament (SPCA Act of 1993). This, together with various animal-related laws means that our inspectors are certified to a high standard and hold specific powers under South African law to act on behalf of an abused animal.
When there is a deliberate act of violence against an animal, or an extreme case of neglect, we have the power to prosecute the perpetrators under this act. Your donations help us when we need reward money to get leads that will help us get dog-fighting syndicates into court, or to track down the perpetrators of particularly unspeakable cruelty.
SPCA Inspectors are empowered to enforce the Animals Protection Act of 1962, the Performing Animals Protection Act of 1935, and all other legislation related to the keeping, transporting, selling and use of animals.
The Inspectorate is the law enforcement unit of the SPCA and our highly trained Inspectors have the legal power to confiscate animals, and to bring criminal charges against offenders.
Our Inspectors provide a 24-hour service, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
Their key duties are to:
• Rescue animals in need.· Investigate cases of animal cruelty or abuse of animals.
• Act on complaints from the public.
• Proactively inspect the condition of domestic and other animals, including livestock, wildlife and exotic animals
• Inspect the establishments in which animals are kept, e.g. pet shops, grooming parlours, circuses, animal exhibitions and abattoirs.
