Garden Route SPCA

Municipal Pound

The SPCA is not the pound — but we provide this vital service on behalf of the municipality.”

The Garden Route SPCA operates the official municipal pound for George and Mossel Bay, in line with our legal mandate. This means we are responsible for the intake, care, and safe keeping of stray, impounded, and confiscated animals — whether they are lost pets, abandoned animals, or livestock removed for roaming or neglect.

Our role is both legal and compassionate: ensuring that animals are housed humanely, given food, water, and medical care, while every effort is made to reunite them with their owners or find a new home.

Operating the pound is costly and complex, but essential. Without an SPCA-run pound, stray animals would have no place of safety, and municipalities would have no legally compliant way to manage them. This is why community support is critical — together, we ensure that no animal is left without care or protection
